Feed the root zone, not the surface
Most of a tree’s feeder roots sit in the top 12–18 inches of soil and extend well past the canopy edge — and when turf surrounds the trunk, it intercepts surface-applied nutrients before they ever reach tree roots. Granular applied properly at the dripline, not piled against the trunk, gets nutrition where it actually does something. Broadcasting around the base of a trunk is one of the most common and least effective things people do.
Palms are their own discipline
Palms suffer from chronic potassium, magnesium, and manganese deficiencies in South Florida soils — and the symptoms (frizzled new growth, frond yellowing, dieback) are routinely misread as disease or overwatering. The UF/IFAS “palm special” 8-2-12+4Mg formulation exists specifically to prevent this. Getting palm nutrition right is a specialized problem, and it’s one we treat as exactly that.

How often should trees and shrubs be fertilized in South Florida?
Most tree and shrub programs run three to four visits per year, timed to active growth periods and the local fertilizer ordinance restrictions that apply in your municipality. Palms generally benefit from more frequent feeding than shade trees because of their chronic nutrient demands. Established native shade trees in healthy soil may need very little. The right cadence depends entirely on what you’re growing — which is why every program starts with an inventory of what’s actually on the property rather than a blanket schedule.
Where should tree and shrub fertilizer actually be applied?
At the dripline — the area under the outer edge of the canopy — not piled against the trunk. Most of a tree’s feeder roots sit in the top 12–18 inches of soil and extend well past the canopy edge, so nutrition broadcast right at the base of the trunk largely misses the roots that take it up. Properly placed granular feeding across the root zone, combined with foliar sprays for fast micronutrient correction, gets nutrition where the plant can actually use it. It’s a common and costly mistake to dump fertilizer at the trunk and assume the job is done.
My palm fronds are yellowing and the new growth looks frizzled. What’s wrong?
That’s a classic deficiency picture, not necessarily disease. Frond yellowing in palms usually points to potassium or magnesium deficiency, and frizzled, weak new growth (“frizzle top”) is a hallmark of manganese deficiency — all extremely common in South Florida’s sandy, high-pH soils. The good news is these are correctable, but manganese deficiency in particular needs to be caught early because severe cases can kill the palm. Why do palms need a special fertilizer?

My shrubs and ornamentals look yellow even though they’ve been fed. Why?
In South Florida, persistent yellowing on fed plants almost always comes down to micronutrient deficiency — usually iron or manganese — rather than a lack of nitrogen. Sandy, high-pH soils chemically tie up these nutrients even when they’re physically present, so the plant can’t access them. Gardenias, ixora, and many other common ornamentals are especially prone to this. Chelated iron or manganese applied to the foliage bypasses the soil chemistry problem and usually produces a visible green-up within a couple of weeks.

Can fertilization help save a declining tree or palm?
